Paul Desmond - “like a dry martini” in his words, Paul Desmond created a lyrical, light and melodic tone on his saxophone. His sound is known and loved well beyond the common jazz listener and some of his music has been played as a classic standart all around the globe. Needless to say the tune “take 5” is probably the best known jazz composition of all time and has been used in movies and tv shows for decades now, it’s almost a meme at this point. Desmond had real artistic integrity and would not play repeating jazz “Licks”, he was a true improviser, and the melodies were truly touching.
